Laurie Florence is a UIC EAA Board Member-at-Large. Laurie graduated from UIC in 1990 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Laurie has worked for Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (now UL LLC) for 26 years starting as an engineer in the electrical department. She has spent the last 13 years as UL’s Principal Engineer for batteries, fuel cells systems and capacitors. Laurie’s recent focus for the last 6 years has been on large-scale battery systems for both stationary and mobile applications and energy storage systems. Laurie is responsible for the technical input in her areas of responsibility including technical competency of staff and the development and maintenance of the certification categories and standards. She participates on a number of safety and performance standards development committees for various organizations as UL’s technical representative, and is the convener for the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) Subcommittee 21A, working group 5 for large format lithium ion batteries.
Laurie resides in Chicago with her husband, two dogs and three children. Her youngest is also an alumnus of UIC.
